Project Description:
This Project was about the UN and how it works. We learned about different global problems as well and even thought I was a Chair I learned about how different countries feel about the topic of North Korea and Palestine/Israel. We learned writing skills and how to make a resolution. The countries learned about how to write speeches and present them. We learned how the UN handles problems as well.

Should North Korea, as a sovereign nation, be allowed to keep nuclear weapons?
North Korea currently has nuclear weapons and has been threatening to use them against the US and other countries. Even though North Korea needs to be able to protect themselves against all the countries that hate them, they should not be able to have such powerful weapons that could be used for mass destruction, therefore I think they should not be allowed to keep nuclear weapons.
“The lesson in this story,” the Libya situation, “for Kim Jong Un is clear: that while his safety with nuclear weapons is clearly uncertain, he would be even less safe if he gave them up.” (Baker and Kaplan, page 2.) I only agree with the first part of this quote. Yes, I think that the safety with the nuclear weapons is uncertain, I also think that it would be safer without them. In the quote they say “He would be even less safe if he gave them up”, I do not agree with that at all. The world, especially the countries surrounding North Korea are not even close to being safe as long as North Korea has the power to keep nuclear weapons and continue to threaten other countries with them.
If, in fact, they did decide to give up their nuclear weapons, I think that people that have been threatened by them would not be so scared anymore of North Korea because they would have a much smaller chance of being killed by them. If they gave them up, America might possibly do what they did with Libya in December of 2003, nine months after the U.S. invaded Iraq. People in South Korea and even some in North Korea would feel much safer if they weren't in such traumatic thought about if they did one tiny thing wrong they could be killed. If Kim Jong Un did give them up I think he would make more and hide them which would not be good. The UN should try to help fix the situation and make it so North Korea can't make or keep more. Even Though as a sovereign nation they have the right to make their own rules and have their own power in their country, once it becomes a problem to the rest of the world I think that being a sovereign nation shouldn't matter became its no longer just in their country.
All in all, even though North Korea would need the kind of power nuclear weapons have to survive a war, I do not think they should be able to keep them if they are going to threaten countries with it. Kaplan and Baker wrote that Kim Jong Un would be crazy to give up his nuclear weapons, it is more crazy in my mind to keep such a destructive item. I personally don’t see how people think its okay to make something you can kill millions of people with and then to be able to keep them and threaten with it.

Project Reflection:
1.) The MUN project is important because it teaches you many skills like good writing and how to give a good speech. It also teaches you about the UN and how they make global decisions.
2.) I think I used refinement the most because I tried to refine my work as much as I could with my in class essays and briefing issues.
3.) I think my greatest challenge was time management like it always is. I thought I had more time to finish things than I really did but, I got my work done still before I ran out of time.
4.) I thought that the best resolution was obviously the one that got chosen, resolution 2a. Jonathan wrote it and I think that he did a great job with understanding the resolution requirements and keeping his countries views in min.
