Sexuality: Good, or Bad?
Have you ever felt that you were different, but couldn't show it? Or have you ever seen someone struggle with being different, even though we are all people; the same? Socialization is a continuing process in which an individual acquires a personal identity and learns the norms, values, behavior, and social skills appropriate to his or her social position. Sexuality means the capacity of sexual feelings. The importance of this is to realize people are different but the same. When I was younger, I was socialized to believe that you had to be straight. That was negative because it kept my family apart but now I understand that its not a bad thing to not be straight.
I feel like most people have been socialized to think the same as I was about the different sexualities of people. "I have to like girls in order to fit into the cycle of society." -Dylan Williamson. I was socialized the same way as Dylan has been; to like the opposite sex or gender, if we want to fit in. I was taught that people with a different sexuality were not good people and that it was a bad thing to be like them I think differently than those people who taught me.
My family’s views on sexuality have changed over time. I knew that a family member of mine was hiding their sexuality from the rest of our family in fear of not being supported and accepted, but eventually they opened up and told our family. At first my mom was upset and disappointed, and didn't really know what to think about it. But after sometime she was supportive. Now my mom and them are very close and my family is happy together.
My favorite song, Same Love by Macklemore, socializes people positively about sexuality. As Macklemore says in same love, “its human rights for everybody, there is no difference!” and “NO freedom till were equal, damn right I support it!” I agree strongly with those lyrics. I think we should not be treated differently for anything. If we aren't treated equally, we aren't free in our country.
However in our country, some people still don't support gay rights. Only 55% of Americans that voted on whether or not the supported same sex marriages voted yes. The 39% of others (9% of which were unsure) shows that some people still don't believe in equality among other people that are different. And because of the inequality within our supposedly “free” country, gay’s rights, along with others, are diminishing. Why can't free mean equal?
In my mask, I represented how I used to think about sexuality, and how I think now. I split into some categories on my mask, like one spot is showing my non-supportive side of when I was younger and the rest of the mask is showing my very supportive side. I had to revise my mask a lot more than I thought I would have to. In the end it turned out pretty good. What I learned most about this project was the cycle of socialization. I knew nothing about that at the beginning of the year. I learned about the 7 social identities to; age, gender, class, race, sexuality, religion, and able or disable.
Even though I was socialized in my house to think negatively about gay people when I was younger, I still base my beliefs off of Same Love now, because to me, we really aren't free until we are all equal. I have very strong opinions about this topic and I will fight until we are all treated the same for our sexualities because we are all humans and there is no difference. Our insides are the same even though our outsides maybe look different, but that's not a good enough reason to be hated. I think this matters greatly to show people just how much inequality runs in our country and also to show that me and other people I know, are socialized differently.
