My last week was outstanding. I got to learn how to draw someones blood and then I got to practice on the nurse who taught me how. At the end of my internship I have a lot of knowledge and self insight for my future. I have decided that I need to have more variety than just watching organisms grow. I think my favorite part was drawing blood and blood typing. This is making me now think that I could look into being a phlebotomist or something in that field of work. I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to work in a lab and see what my true interests are.
Week 2 has been even more eventful than the last. I started and completed my project and learned how to do some really cool things around the lab. I have been learning about blood typing and even what the lab is in charge of when someone needs a blood transfusion! My project went really well and was as exciting as I hoped it would be. I also have some new found knowledge about a bacteria that is unrepeatable by antibiotics, yet is found naturally in some people's nose and throat.
My first week has been so much fun! I started off on my first day already testing micro organisms by myself. I learned what a variety of things can grow in our throats that are meant to be there along with things that are not meant to be there. I learned about the different kinds of Strep you can get and how to tell Strep apart from Staph. I learned about gram negative and gram positive rods which are one way to tell the difference between Strep and Staph using special dyes and a microscope. I am so excited for my next 2 weeks here and to start on my project on Monday!
I have many anticipation for my internship at Cedar Diagnostics. Working a lab will be a very different experience for me and I am nervous and excited. I am a bit nervous about not knowing what they are talking about because I have never heard of a lot of the machines they work with and I do not know what they do. I am more excited than nervous because I have always wanted to work in a lab when I am an adult so this will give me the chance to see if I love working in a lab or not. |
